- Press Release No. 57/1491
On July 10, the 35th Garrison Court held the 14th hearing in the trial for the death of 19 year old sailor Sergei Khudoroshko from the Novosibirsk Region. The Mother's Right Foundation represents the interests of the parents of the deceased. Sergei was called up to military service in November 2010, and served in the Coast Guard Forces, Kamchatka. On April 28, 2011 Sergei was found dead in the basement of a building belonging to M.U. 09762. According to the investigation, Mr. Chamkurov extorted money from Khudoroshko and threatened him with violence. On March 30 and April 14, 2011, during medical examinations, a doctor's assistant registered Sergei's numerous bodily injuries: hematomas and scratches. Mr. Chamkurov, a serviceman of M.U. 09762, was charged under Article 163, Section 1; Article 163, Section 2, p. "c", of the RF CC (violent extortion) and Article 335, Section 3, of the RF CC (violation of military regulations resulting in serious consequences). The previous hearings were held on May 29, 2012; May 30, 2012; June 4, 2012; June 5, 2012; June 6, 2012; June 14, 2012; June 18, 2012; June 21, 2012; June 26, 2012; June 27, 2012; June 28, 2012; July 3, 2012; July 4, 2012; July 6, 2012. The interests of the mother of the deceased are represented by Zarema Yusupova, a lawyer of the Mother's Right Foundation.
The hearing of July 10 was attended by Sergei Prokhorov, another representative of the defendant in the compensation suit. He promised to submit a letter of objection next week (let us remind you that our lawyer has been staying in Kamchatka for a month...).
At the request of Prosecutor Vladimir Nosovets, the court interrogated Ruslan Batyrbayev, Sergei's classmate, who served in another sub-unit of the same unit. According to Batyrbayev, before the service in the army, at school, Sergei used to never complain about his problems to his friends; he used to pretend that everything was fine...
Ruslan told that Sergei (drafted later than him) had asked him about whether he should take up the ‘100 day service'. Ruslan knew that Sergei had asked the same question to his cousin Andrei.
‘Didn't you ask him about why he was interested in that?' asked the lawyer of the Mother's Right Foundation, Zarema Yusupova.
‘No,' answered Batyrbayev.
Also, there was a case when Sergei gave his money to Ruslan for keeping. The latter didn't know why Sergei was not able to keep it at his place.
Ruslan Batyrbayev rejected the version according to which Sergei had committed suicide because of the girl: Sergei was on good terms with his girlfriend, and they did not quarrel.
The witness confirmed that just before Sergei's death, Chamkurov had demanded that Sergei get some tea for him. He gave a bad reference to the accused: Chamkurov ‘put himself above other servicemen' and cursed them with foul words.
Next hearing is scheduled for July 11, 14:00.
